Commissions

  • ILS-Africa Chancellery
    • Tasks: The Chancellery acts as a reference group for the ILS-Africa President and the ILS-Africa Secretary General on major matters that may impact the Continental Branch during the periods between the meetings of the Board of Directors. The Chancellery also help coordinate the work of the Regional Zones in a cohesive manner, Review sensitive and confidential items of the organisation, oversees strategic planning, and reviews proposals for honours in accordance with set policies. The Chancellery acts as the Disciplinary Committee for the ILS-Africa.
    • Composition: The ILS-Africa Chancellery is composed of the ILS-Africa President, the ILS-Africa Secretary General and the four ILS-Africa Vice-Presidents. Each of them have voting rights, the Chair has an additional casting vote.
  • ILS-Africa Sport Commission
    • Tasks: The ILS-Africa Sport Commission oversees all aspects of lifesaving sport so that the goals and success measures set out in the ILS-Africa Strategic Plan are achieved. The Commission also liaises with other Commissions of the ILS-Africa in relations to issues regarding sport. The Commission supports the ILS-Africa Board of Directors in the facilitation of relationships with organisations collaborating in areas within its area of responsibility. The Commission reports to the ILS-Africa Board of Directors.
    • Composition: The Commission is composed of a voting Chair, a voting Secretary and a number of voting Members as decided by the ILS-Africa Board of Directors.

  • ILS-Africa Drowning Prevention Commission
    • Tasks: The ILS-Africa Drowning Prevention Commission will provide leadership in the global effort to prevent drowning with an emphasis on reducing drowning of children in Africa. The Commission’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, drowning research and drowning reports, child drowning, the African Conference of Drowning Prevention and African drowning prevention. The Commission supports the ILS-Africa Board of Directors in the facilitation of relationships with organisations collaborating in areas within its area of responsibility. The ILS-Africa Drowning Prevention Commission reports to the ILS-Africa Board of Directors.

  • ILS-Africa Rescue Commission
    • Tasks: The ILS-Africa Rescue Commission seeks to enhance the quality of lifesaving and drowning prevention activities throughout Africa through identification of best practice, development of recommended minimum standards, promoting and encouraging adherence to these standards, and dissemination of lifesaving information in the areas of public education, medical care, rescue, and lifesaver education. The Commission’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, rescue, operation and training, education, water safety, disaster prevention, risk assessment, certification, medical and research. The Commission supports the ILS-Africa Board of Directors in the facilitation of relationships with organisations collaborating in areas within its area of responsibility. The ILS-Africa Rescue Commission reports to the ILS-Africa Board of Directors.

The Commission’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, financial management, revenue generation, sponsoring, marketing and business development.   • ILS-Africa Athletes Commission
    • Tasks: The ILS Athletes Committee is tasked to empower the athlete’s representation in the ILS Africa decision-making processes, to support the athlete development in their sporting and non-sporting careers and to represent the athlete’s views in the decisions across the ILS Africa. The ILS Athletes Committee reports to the ILS Africa Board of Directors.
    • Composition: The ILS Athletes Committee is composed of at least six elected persons from which 50% are male and 50% are female. It comprises an elected Chair, an elected Secretary and a minimum of four elected Members. The Committee represents at least three of the four ILS Africa Regions. The Committee Members are active and/or recently retired athletes (maximum 5 years retired at the start of their four-year mandate).
