DESCRIPTION:The Meeting of the ILS Board of Directors was organised in Agadir\, Morocco on 15 Februari 2020. The Meeting took place in Hotel Atlantic Palace in the morning and in Hotel Al Moggar in the afternoon. The Meeting was attended by representatives of Algeria (2)\, Burkina Faso (1)\, Cameroon (2)\, Central African Republic (2)\, Djibouti (2)\, Egypt (3)\, Ghana (1)\, Libya (1)\, Mauritania (2)\,  Morocco (7)\, Niger (1)\, Senegal (1)\, South Africa (2)\, Tunisia (2) and Belgium (2). The Meeting representatives were welcomed by Mr. Mohamed Ali Gharbal\, President of the Royal Moroccan Lifesaving Federation (FRMS). Reports were provided by Dr. Mohamed Saleh MD (Egypt)\, ILS-Africa President and Mr. Mohamed Mjahed (Morocco)\, ILS-Africa Secretary General and by the ILS-Africa Vice-Presidents. Further reports were provided on the ILS and the ILS-Africa activities. The Meeting was informed that the Elective General Assembly of the ILS Africa Region will be organised on 21 September 2020 in Riccione – Italy\, and this in conjunction with the ILS Elective General Assembly and the Lifesaving World Championships (LWC). The Board of Directors approved the amendments to the ILS-Africa Constitution and Bye Laws\, which will be submitted for final approval to the Elective General Assembly.

SUMMARY:International Lifeguard course in Cameroon
DESCRIPTION:An ILS International Pool Lifeguard course was organised in Douala\, Cameroon from 15 to 22 December 2019. The course was subsidised by the ILS Projects Funds and was under the banner of the Cameroon Swimming and Lifesaving Federation (FECANAS). \n29 candidates (27 men and 2 women) followed the course which lasted 50 hours (6 days of 8.5 hours) and one full day of examinations. \nThe classroom was located in Hotel Belavie in Douala and the swimming pool used was the one of the Cameroon Red Cross. The course was regularly visited by the authorities of the Cameroon Federation. The course Instructor was Mohamed Rharbal (called Simo Alaska) from Morocco. Two local Instructors; Landry Touka and Cabrel Jehovah were assistant instructors.

SUMMARY:Beach Lifeguard course in Mauritania
DESCRIPTION:Under the patronage of the Minister of Labour\, Youth and Sport\, a beach/surf lifeguard course was organised in Nouadhibou\, a coastal city of Mauritania. The course was co-organised by the ILS and the ILS African Academy with the collaboration of the Mauritania Diving and Lifesaving Federation. \nThe course was provided by Afara Bouchtaoui from Morocco\, ILS International Instructor. The course took place from 22 to 28 November 2019. Fifteen male students took place in the course and 10 of them  received the ILS International Beach/Surf Lifeguard Certificate. \n  \nThe course was visited by the Ambassador of Morocco in Mauritania and by the Regional Governor of Nouadhibou.

SUMMARY:World Conference on Drowning Prevention - Durban - South Africa
DESCRIPTION:Lifesaving South Africa (LSA) organised the ILS 2019 World Conference on Drowning Prevention (WCDP) in Durban from 07 to 11 October 2019. \nThe WCDP is the International Life Saving Federation’s flagship educational event. This biennial conference brings together the world’s foremost experts\, research\, systems and information on drowning prevention\, rescue\, lifesaving and water safety. The exchange\, debate and development are designed to find ways to reduce death and injury in all aquatic environments worldwide. \nThe WCDP 2019 was an opportunity to report on the progress made on the 10 actions to prevent drowning\, as outlined in the 2014 World Health Organisation’s Global Report on Drowning. This is much more than a conference; it is a convergence of people and projects aimed directly at addressing a highly preventable public health challenge. \nMore information can be found on: https://www.wcdp2019.co.za/ \nOver 550 people participated in the Conference. SUMMARY:International Lifeguard Instructors Course - Accra - Ghana
DESCRIPTION:The Ghana Lifesaving and Diving Association (GHALDA) organised an ILS International Instructors Course for Instructors of Pool Lifeguards and Beach Lifeguards in Accra from 2 to 9 September 2019. \nThe project leader is David Afezame\, the President of the Ghana Lifesaving and Diving Association (GHALDA). The course was provided in English by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Kotb PhD (Egypt). Prof. Dr. Mohamed Kotb is an ILS accredited Instructor and is an ILS accredited Instructor of Instructors. \nEleven lifeguard instructors participated in the first two days\, but one participant was withdrawn from the course by the Ghana Lifesaving and Diving Association (GHALDA) because of course fees issues. The theoretical and practical sessions of the course were held in the Ghana university swimming pool in “Legon District” in Accra. A suitable room adjacent to the pool used for the theoretical sessions\, while the pool was used for the practical sessions. The swimming pool was 50m long\, 20m wide and 7m deep on one end. Seven instructors passed the course and three instructors did not. \n \n

The objective of the course was to create good levelled International Lifeguards that could provide Lifeguard services in the country in accordance with the ILS standards. \nThe course was attended by 69 candidats: 67 men and 2 women. \nThe theoretical classes were organised in the National General Assembly Hall and the theoretic courses were organised in the Rock Club Swimming Pool.

Assistants were Dr. Motaz El Haddad PhD\, and Mr. Mohannad El Bokl\, who are ILS accredited Instructors as well. \nSix students failed the tests and are preparing for re-test.

DESCRIPTION:The Lifesaving Federation of Burkina Faso organised and Course for Pool Lifeguard and Beach Lifeguard from 24 to 30 June 2019 in Ouagadougou – Burkina Faso. \nThe course leader was Mady Compaore\,  the President of the Burkina Faso Lifesaving Federation. The course was provided in French by Mohamed Rharbal (Morocco) (better known as Simo Alaska). He is an ILS accredited Instructor. \nThe objective of the project was to create good levelled International Pool Lifeguards that could provide Lifeguard services in the country in accordance with the ILS standards. \nThe Government of Burkina Faso has constructed\, with the aid of the Princess Charlène of Monaco Foundation\, a swimming pool in the Ouagadougou region. The course has provided sufficient lifeguards to that pool as well as to the other pools of Ouagadougou. 50 students (48 male and 2 female) participated in the course.

DESCRIPTION:The EDLF organised an ILS International Pool and Beach Lifeguard Instructors retraining Course from 20 to 26 June in Egypt. 65 students participated in the retraining course in Cairo and 45 students participated in the retraining course in Alexandria. \nThe course in Cairo took place in the Golden Tolip Hotel of Cairo Airport on 21 and 22 June 2019 and lasted 15 hours of retraining. 65 students participated in the course which was provided by Dr. Harald Vervaecke PhD and by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Kotb PhD (Egypt)\, both ILS accredited Instructor and ILS accredited Instructor of Instructor. \nThe Course in Alexandria took place in the Golden Tolip Hotel in Alexandria on 24 and 25 June 2019 and lasted 15 hours of retraining. 45 students participated in the course which was provided by Dr. Harald Vervaecke Phd and by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Kotb PhD (Egypt)\, both ILS accredited Instructor and ILS accredited Instructor of Instructor.

DESCRIPTION:The Egyptian Diving and Lifesaving Federation (EDLF) organised an ILS International Lifeguard Instructors course in Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt) from 05 to 14 March 2019. 33 students from Egypt\, Iraq and Kuwait participated. The course took place in the Training Centre of the coastal city of Sharm El Sheikh. The course lasted a full week and over 50 hours and ended with one examination day. The objective of the course was to create good levelled International Lifeguard Instructors that could provide Lifeguard courses in their countries in accordance with the ILS standards. \nThe course was provided in English by Dr. Harald Vervaecke PhD and interpreted by Prof Dr. Mohammed Mahmoud Abbas Kotb PhD. The four course assistants were: Prof Dr. Mohammed Mahmoud Abbas Kotb PhD\, Dr. Hesham Rabea Zaki Qura PhD\, Dr. Abdelaziz Mohamed Abdelaziz PhD and Prof. Dr. Mohamed Hassan Mohamed Ali who all are ILS accredited Instructors.

Two students did not pass: one from Niger and one from Kenya. \nThe Instructors were: Dr. Harald Vervaecke PhD (SG) and Dr. Mohamed Ali Gharbal (Morocco) as well as five co-instructors from Morocco.

DESCRIPTION:The Royal Moroccan Lifesaving Federation organised the first All-African Lifesaving Competition in Agadir (Morocco) from 25 to 29 October 2017. The Championship was under the high patronage of H.R.H. the King Mohammed VI of Morocco. The event was attended by one Minister\, the Mayor of Agadir\, Mayoral Deputies and co-workers of the city\, high ranked Military authorities and more than 15 National Lifesaving Presidents and or National Board Members. The event was also attended by two delegates of the Princess Charlène of Monaco Foundation. \nThe participants (competitors\, technical officials and team officials) came from the following 30 nations: Algeria (1 participant)\, Belgium (4)\, Benin (1)\, Burkina Faso (1)\, Cameroon (5)\, Central African Republic (1)\, Cape Verde (2)\, Comoros (2)\, Djibouti (1)\, Egypt (24)\, France (2)\, Gambia (4)\, Ghana (6)\, Guinea-Bissau (5)\, Kenya (13)\, Mauritania (5)\, Monaco (1)\, Morocco (56)\, Netherlands (4)\, Niger (1)\, Norway (4)\, Portugal (ASNASA) (2)\, Sao Tome and Principe (2)\, Senegal (1)\, South Africa (2)\,  Spain (9)\, Sudan (1)\, Tunisia (2)\, United Arab Emirates (2)\, Zambia (1).
