SUMMARY:2022 African Lifesaving Championship and Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Egyptian Diving and Lifesaving Federation (EDLF) was the Host of the 2nd African Lifesaving Conference and Championships. The Championship was initially planned to be organised in Alexandria in November 2021 but\, due to the Covid-19 pandemic\, it was postponed to 16 to 20 February 2022. \nThe EDLF agreed to sponsor the accommodation and meals of two athletes from all African Member nations on the basis of one male and one female competitor. \nThe Conference and Championships were attended by delegates from 16 African countries: Burkina Faso\, Cameroon\, Central African Republic\, Congo-Kinshasa\, Côte d’Ivoire\, Djibouti\, Egypt\, Gambia\, Ghana\, Guinea Bissau\, Libya\, Mauritania\, Morocco\, Senegal\, South Africa and Uganda. Additionally to this\, delegates from Belgium and the United Kingdom also participated\, making the total of 18 countries present. \nThe Overall Point score of the Championships are as follows: \n\nFirst Place and African Champion with 500 points: South Africa.\nSecond Place with 468 points: Egypt.\nThird Place with 410 points: Morocco.\nFourth Place with 54 points: Senegal\, Fifth place with 35 points: Gambia\, Sixth place with 20 points: Cameroon\, Seventh place with 18 points: Mauritania\, Eight place with 12 points: Ivory Coast\, Ninth place with 10 points Guinea Bissau\, Tenth place with 0 points: Congo (Kinshasa)\, Burkina Faso\, Central African Republic\,  Uganda\,  Ghana\, Djibouti.\n\nThe President of the ILS-Africa Confederation\, stated : “The African Championship was masterly organised by the Egyptian Diving and Lifesaving Federation and has not only shine a light on lifesaving sport in Egypt\, but will also accentuate the youthful energy and high performance that all lifesaving sport disciplines can bring to Africa and the world stage. We also thank Mr Sameh El Shazly\, the president of the EDLF for the efforts made to welcome all Africans under the slogan: Africa united to stop drowning.” \nMr Sameh El-Shazly\, President of the EDLF states that : “He is delighted to have welcomed all the joining teams whom represent different African nations in a fair competition that has resulted in growing up and empowering the friendship between all participants. The Championships will surely leave a remarkable and memorable print in their minds. \n  \nEgypt \nEgypt is a country located in the North of the African Continent\, with the Sinai Peninsula forming a land bridge in Western Asia. Egypt is covering an area of about 1 million square kilometers (390\,000 sqare miles). Egypt is one of the most populous countries in Africa and the Middle East. The great majority of its estimated 82 million live near the banks of the Nile River where the only agricultural land is found. About half of Egypt’s residents live in urban areas\, with the majority spread across the densely-populated centres of greater Cairo\, Alexandria and other major cities in the Nile Delta. Egypt is famous for its ancient civilization and some of the world’s most famous monuments\, including the Giza pyramid complex and its Great Sphinx. The southern city of Luxor contains numerous ancient artifacts\, such as the Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings. Egypt is certainly a prime location to see the great heritage from the ancient world\, including Pyramids and wonderful temples\, but Egypt also offers nature and desert treks\, great scuba diving and even golf\, fishing and birding expeditions. One may choose to relax on the wondrous Egypt Red Sea or Sinai coasts\, take in the high culture of Cairo\, or even leisurely float down the Egyptian Nile on a luxurious river boat. \nAlexandria \nAlexandria\, with a population of 5 million\, is the second-largest city in Egypt and is known as “The Pearl of the Mediterranean”. It has the country’s largest seaport\, serving about 80% of Egypt’s imports and exports. Alexandria is also an important tourist resort. Alexandria has an atmosphere that is more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern; its ambience and cultural heritage distance it from the rest of the country although it is actually only 225 km from Cairo. Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC\, Alexandria became the capital of Greco-Roman Egypt\, its status as a beacon of culture symbolised by the “Pharos”\, the legendary lighthouse that was one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The setting for the stormy relationship between Cleopatra and Mark Antony\, Alexandria was also the centre of learning in the ancient world. Alexandria was the Capital of Egypt for nearly thousand years\, until the Muslim conquest of Egypt in 641 AD when a new capital was founded at Futsal (Fustat was later absorbed into Cairo). From the 19th century Alexandria took a new role\, as a focus for Egypt’s commercial and maritime expan­sion. Generations of immigrants from Greece\, Italy and the Levant settled here and made the city synonymous with commerce\, cosmopolitanism and bohemian culture. \n  \nGolden Jewel Beach & Hotel \nOn impressive beachfront grounds along the Mediterranean Sea\, this informal resort is 4 km from the Bibliotheca Alexandria and 50 km from the Alexandria International Airport. Participants to the course include five fire-fighters of the city of Kribi.

SUMMARY:International Lifeguard Instructors Course in Cairo - Egypt
DESCRIPTION:The ILS and the ILS-Africa Academy nominated Prof Dr. Mohammed Kotb PhD as the International Chief Instructor to lead an International Lifeguard Instructor’s course in Egypt with the help of two other international Chief Instructors: Prof. Dr. Mohamed Hassan PhD and Mr. Ashraf El-Bokl. The course was organised by the Egyptian Diving and Lifesaving Federation (EDLF) and took place in Cairo\, the capital of Egypt\, from 30 November to 5 December 2020. Fifty four lifeguards participated in the course. \nThe EDLF took care of all instructors’ full accommodation\, incidental costs\, teaching fees\, transportation\, the rental of the classroom and swimming pool\, the course and training equipment. \nThe theoretical and practical sessions took place from 30 November to 4 December 2020\, and the final exam was held on 5 December 2020. The theoretical and practical sessions of the course were held in the Cairo International Stadium. The theoretical sessions were held in one of the lecturing halls of the Stadium\, while the practical sessions were held in one of the swimming pools in the Stadium. The swimming pool was 50m long\, 20m wide and 3m deep on one end. \nIn order to pass the course\, a score of 80% of the points must be reached. The final results are that twenty lifeguards passed the course with a score of 80% or higher. The EDLF will set and announce a date for the re-test during the next few days for all the lifeguards who did not passed. \nAll the lifeguards signed the agreement and the inscription forms of the ILS.  All the participants received in the beginning of the course hard copies of the ILS Arabic and English Manuals\, and the updated criteria for lifeguards and instructors.  A detailed explanation was given to present the ILS system\, course organisation\, as well as the course exams.  An electronic copy of all the files received from Dr. Harald Vervaecke PhD before were distributed to all participants.

SUMMARY:International Instructors course in Ryadh - Saudi Arabia
DESCRIPTION:The ILS and the ILS-Africa Academy nominated Dr. Mohammed Ali Gharbal PhD\, Mr Mohamed Rharbal and Mss Rahib Fatima Ezzahrae as the International Chief Instructors to lead three International Lifeguard Instructor’s course in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The courses were organised by the Saudi Lifesaving Federation (SLSF) and took place in Riyadh\, the capital of Saudi Arabia: \n\nCourse 1: from 15 to 21 November 2020: Twenty five men lifeguard Instructors participated in the course.\nCourse 2: from 22 to 28 November 2020: Fifteen men lifeguard Instructors participated in the course.\nCourse 3: from 22 to 28 November 2020: twenty three women lifeguard Instructors participated in the course.\n\nAll Instructors and students had to pass a Covid-19 test and were quarantined during one week. Social distancing was respected as far as possible. \nThe SLSF took care of all Instructors’ airfare\, full accommodation\, incidental costs\, teaching fees\, local transportation\, the rental of the classroom and swimming pool\, the course manual\, the Certificates and the training equipment. \nThe theoretical and practical sessions took place in the Prince Faisal Bin Fahd Olympic Complex. The Theoretical course was held in a large auditorium and the Practical courses in two semi-Olympic Swimming pools which were only reserved for the course. \nAll the participants received in the beginning of the course hard copies of the ILS Arabic Manuals\, and the updated criteria for lifeguards and instructors.

DESCRIPTION:The General Assembly of the African Lifesaving Academy (ALA) took place on 16 February 2020 in the city of Agadir in Morocco. The Meeting was organised in Hotel Al Moggar and was attended by representatives of 14 African countries: Algeria (2)\, Burkina Faso (1)\, Cameroon (2)\, Central African Republic (2)\, Djibouti (2)\, Egypt (4)\, Ghana (1)\, Libya (1)\, Mauritania (2)\,  Morocco (14)\, Niger (1)\, Senegal (1)\, South Africa (2)\, Tunisia (1) and Belgium (2). The Meeting representatives were welcomed by Mr. Mohamed Ali Gharbal\, President of the Royal Moroccan Lifesaving Federation (FRMS) and President of the Academy. The Minutes of the previous meeting was approved and all actions and courses that took place in Africa from 2017 to 2019 were highlighted. Constructive discussions took place on the role of the Academy\, the current structure thereof and the bright future of the Academy. The Meeting further approved the criteria for Pool Lifeguard\, Open Water Lifeguard\, Beach Lifeguard\, Pool Lifeguard Instructor\, Open Water Lifeguard Instructor\, Beach Lifeguard Instructor as well as the education criteria for Technical Officials (Judges and Referees) and the criteria for Coaching/Training in the African Continent. The Meeting also ratified the course manual which is available in three languages: French\, English and Arabic. \nThe Meeting was informed that the Election for the Academy will be done at the next meeting which is planned to take place in February 2021.  The General Assembly of the Academy approved the amendments to the Constitution of the Academy. \nRepresentatives from the following 13 nations signed the Member Federation Agreement so as to follow the recommendations of the Academy in their countries related to the education of lifeguard\, lifeguard instructors\, technical officials and trainers/coaches: Algeria\, Burkina Faso\, Cameroon\, Central African Republic\, Djibouti\, Egypt\, Ghana\, Libya\, Mauritania\, Morocco\, Niger\, Senegal and Tunisia.

Further reports were provided on the ILS and the ILS-Africa activities. The Meeting was informed that the Elective General Assembly of the ILS Africa Region will be organised on 21 September 2020 in Riccione – Italy\, and this in conjunction with the ILS Elective General Assembly and the Lifesaving World Championships (LWC). The Board of Directors approved the amendments to the ILS-Africa Constitution and Bye Laws\, which will be submitted for final approval to the Elective General Assembly.

DESCRIPTION:An ILS International Pool Lifeguard course was organised in Douala\, Cameroon from 15 to 22 December 2019. The course was subsidised by the ILS Projects Funds and was under the banner of the Cameroon Swimming and Lifesaving Federation (FECANAS). \n29 candidates (27 men and 2 women) followed the course which lasted 50 hours (6 days of 8.5 hours) and one full day of examinations. \nThe classroom was located in Hotel Belavie in Douala and the swimming pool used was the one of the Cameroon Red Cross. The course was regularly visited by the authorities of the Cameroon Federation. The course Instructor was Mohamed Rharbal (called Simo Alaska) from Morocco. Two local Instructors; Landry Touka and Cabrel Jehovah were assistant instructors.

DESCRIPTION:Under the patronage of the Minister of Labour\, Youth and Sport\, a beach/surf lifeguard course was organised in Nouadhibou\, a coastal city of Mauritania. The course was co-organised by the ILS and the ILS African Academy with the collaboration of the Mauritania Diving and Lifesaving Federation. \nThe course was provided by Afara Bouchtaoui from Morocco\, ILS International Instructor. The course took place from 22 to 28 November 2019. Fifteen male students took place in the course and 10 of them  received the ILS International Beach/Surf Lifeguard Certificate. \n  \nThe course was visited by the Ambassador of Morocco in Mauritania and by the Regional Governor of Nouadhibou.

DESCRIPTION:Lifesaving South Africa (LSA) organised the ILS 2019 World Conference on Drowning Prevention (WCDP) in Durban from 07 to 11 October 2019. \nThe WCDP is the International Life Saving Federation’s flagship educational event. This biennial conference brings together the world’s foremost experts\, research\, systems and information on drowning prevention\, rescue\, lifesaving and water safety. The exchange\, debate and development are designed to find ways to reduce death and injury in all aquatic environments worldwide. \nThe WCDP 2019 was an opportunity to report on the progress made on the 10 actions to prevent drowning\, as outlined in the 2014 World Health Organisation’s Global Report on Drowning. DESCRIPTION:The Ghana Lifesaving and Diving Association (GHALDA) organised an ILS International Instructors Course for Instructors of Pool Lifeguards and Beach Lifeguards in Accra from 2 to 9 September 2019. \nThe project leader is David Afezame\, the President of the Ghana Lifesaving and Diving Association (GHALDA). The course was provided in English by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Kotb PhD (Egypt). Prof. Dr. Mohamed Kotb is an ILS accredited Instructor and is an ILS accredited Instructor of Instructors. \nEleven lifeguard instructors participated in the first two days\, but one participant was withdrawn from the course by the Ghana Lifesaving and Diving Association (GHALDA) because of course fees issues. The theoretical and practical sessions of the course were held in the Ghana university swimming pool in “Legon District” in Accra. A suitable room adjacent to the pool used for the theoretical sessions\, while the pool was used for the practical sessions. The swimming pool was 50m long\, 20m wide and 7m deep on one end. Seven instructors passed the course and three instructors did not. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:The Lifesaving Federation of Burkina Faso organised and Course for Pool Lifeguard and Beach Lifeguard from 24 to 30 June 2019 in Ouagadougou – Burkina Faso. \nThe course leader was Mady Compaore\,  the President of the Burkina Faso Lifesaving Federation. The course was provided in French by Mohamed Rharbal (Morocco) (better known as Simo Alaska). He is an ILS accredited Instructor. \nThe objective of the project was to create good levelled International Pool Lifeguards that could provide Lifeguard services in the country in accordance with the ILS standards. \nThe Government of Burkina Faso has constructed\, with the aid of the Princess Charlène of Monaco Foundation\, a swimming pool in the Ouagadougou region. The course has provided sufficient lifeguards to that pool as well as to the other pools of Ouagadougou. 50 students (48 male and 2 female) participated in the course.

DESCRIPTION:The Tunisian Diving and Lifesaving Federation organised a Lifesaving Coaching and Referee course in Tunis – Tunisia from 28 April to 5 May 2018. \nNineteen (19) students participated in the course which was provided by Commander Wim Nuyens (Belgium)\, Member of the ILS Sport Commission.

SUMMARY:International Lifeguard Instructors Course - Sharm El Sheikh - Egypt
DESCRIPTION:The Egyptian Diving and Lifesaving Federation (EDLF) organised an ILS International Lifeguard Instructors course in Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt) from 05 to 14 March 2019. 33 students from Egypt\, Iraq and Kuwait participated. The course took place in the Training Centre of the coastal city of Sharm El Sheikh. The course lasted a full week and over 50 hours and ended with one examination day. The objective of the course was to create good levelled International Lifeguard Instructors that could provide Lifeguard courses in their countries in accordance with the ILS standards. \nThe course was provided in English by Dr. Harald Vervaecke PhD and interpreted by Prof Dr. Mohammed Mahmoud Abbas Kotb PhD. The four course assistants were: Prof Dr. Mohammed Mahmoud Abbas Kotb PhD\, Dr. Hesham Rabea Zaki Qura PhD\, Dr. Abdelaziz Mohamed Abdelaziz PhD and Prof. Dr. Mohamed Hassan Mohamed Ali who all are ILS accredited Instructors.

SUMMARY:International Lifeguard Instructors Course - Agadir - Morocco
DESCRIPTION:The Moroccan Lifesaving Federation organised an International Lifeguard Instructors Course in Agadir (Morocco) from 14 to 24 February 2019. The objective of the course was to create good levelled International Lifeguard Instructors that could provide Lifeguard courses in their countries in accordance with ILS standards. \nRepresentatives from 9 different nations participated: Morocco\, Belgium\, Algeria\, Ghana; Burkina Faso\, Libya\, Cameroon\, Kenya\, Mauritania. In total over 30 people. \n13 male students participated: 5 from Morocco\, 3 from Cameroon\, 2 from Niger\, 2 from Kenya and one from Libya. Two students did not pass: one from Niger and one from Kenya. \nThe Instructors were: Dr. Harald Vervaecke PhD (SG) and Dr. Mohamed Ali Gharbal (Morocco) as well as five co-instructors from Morocco.

DESCRIPTION:The Royal Moroccan Lifesaving Federation organised a course of ILS International Instructors for Pool Lifeguards and Beach/Ocean Lifeguards\, that took place from 24 June to 1 July 2018 in Agadir – Morocco. The course was headed by Dr. Harald Vervaecke PhD\, Secretary General of the International Lifesaving Federation (ILS) and Dr. Mohamed Ali Gharbal PhD\, President of the FRMS and ILS International Instructor. \nCo-Instructors were: Mr Khalil Loksairy\, Mrs. Adil Billi\, Mr Ahmed Amine El Oumri\, Mr Mohamed Rharbal\, Mr. Touhami Hamma\, Mr Badr Makyassi and Mrs Fatima Azzahrae Rahib from Morocco. \n43 participants from the following countries took part: Algeria\, Morocco\, Egypt\, Sudan\, Mauritania\, Central African Republic\, Burkina Faso\, Senegal\, Gambia. \nThe objective of the course was to create good levelled International Lifeguard Instructors that could provide Lifeguard courses in their countries in accordance with ILS standards.
